zBoost-ONE Review by The Cell Phone Junkie

Mickey Papillion, The Cell Phone Junkie, reviewed the YX400-PCS this week.

Designed with consumers in mind, the zBoost-One signal booster extends service in the home or office for up to 4 devices on either the Sprint or MetroPCS network.  The zBoost-One provides up to 1200 square feet of additional coverage through the all in one unit.  This is the first of its kind from Wi-Ex, actually syncing with your device to reduce dropped calls and increase call quality.  Available from Wi-Ex for $250.

Installation

Unlike most signal boosters, the zBoost-One requires very little configuration  The first time you turn the unit on, it needs to be synced with the network of your carrier of choice.  Next, put the unit on a window sill or in an area of the strongest signal.  Then connect power to the unit via the provided AC power supply.  The “SyncLink” button will flash red.  Place a call from your phone, and once the call connects, press the SyncLink button, which will then blink green and the Handset Indicator will turn on.

Finally, use the Signal Strength Indicator to find a location that has 3 or more lit bars to provide the optimal performance for the base unit.

Here is a brief overview of the zBoost-One, along with the installation and some real world testing.

Use and Results
Sprint service in my house has been an issue since I moved in 3 years ago.  The zBoost has given me the confidence to use my Sprint Blackberry almost anywhere in the house, and not fear the dropped calls that I was used to.  The signal strength in the surrounding rooms to the installation point has been boosted up to 10-15 dBm, allowing the phone to show an increase in 2-3 signal bars consistently.

Overall
For $250, the zBoost-One Cell Phone Signal Booster from Wi-Ex is a great home or office solution for those with poor service and dropped calls. Having used other signal enhancing products, the One works as advertised, and allows phones to be used in areas that have poor service more reliably.

Can You Hear Me Now? And How!

Wi-Ex’s zBoost SOHO-YX545 can dramatically improve home cellphone reception.

MANY AMERICANS HAVE no landline phone in their homes. Instead, they rely solely on a cellphone. But that’s problematic if only a marginal cellular signal reaches your abode. One recent survey found that about 65% of respondents had problems with their cellphone signal in their residence.

There are solutions, including in-house personal cell towers dedicated to a particular carrier. But guests whose phones are on a different system can’t use these, and neither can you if you switch to a rival service.

Labor Day 2010

Today is Labor Day. Although many of celebrate this holiday each year with parades, barbeques and end of summer parties, I was curious to understnd where this national holiday began. To learn about the history, I visited the U.S. Department of Labor’s website, where I found the following.

Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Founder of Labor Day

More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers.

Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”

But Peter McGuire’s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic.

The First Labor Day

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.
